How To Choose a DJ For Your Wedding

“Everyone knows or is a DJ” or at least they think so. This can make finding a DJ easy or a little frustrating but the following tips may help make things a bit smoother and allow you to make a confident decision.  Just because you know a DJ, or they’re giving you a “great deal” you don’t have to hire them for your wedding. here are some steps you can follow to hire the right DJ and make your special day even more memorable.

  • Discuss Their Qualifications

How long have they been entertaining weddings? Is this a full-time business or just something they do one the side. Truthfully, lots of DJs are weekend warriors.  This doesn’t make them better or worse performers, but sometimes that means other work/career obligations could take priority over your wedding. If you do choose to hire someone you know, make sure you have a contract that covers exactly what they will provide. Include date, times, description of services, pricing, payment schedule and any other important details.  More than anything, make sure they understand weddings and know how to follow your timeline.

  • Check With The Venue

Does your venue have a preferred vendor? If so, that DJ probably knows helpful details about the venue. Even if you don’t intend on booking them, take the time to speak to them. More than likely they will give you some insight to how the venue works on the day of your wedding or just give you more confidence in the DJ you do book.  Side Tip- always call back/email to let a company know if you won’t be using them- this will prevent you from receiving additional followup calls

  • Ask For Referrals

Ask around.  You’re bound to have a friend who had a great DJ and I’m sure you’ll find someone who was unhappy with their DJ as well. Find out who they interviewed and why they chose who they did.  Then ask what they liked or didn’t like about their experience.

  • Check Out Local Online Forums

Look at online wedding forums for your area. Stars and accolades from well-known wedding resource websites can be purchased and posted on any company’s profile so you can’t always trust what you read on the internet.  Take the time to read real reviews.  Additionally, join some local social media wedding groups and get first-hand accounts from people who know the DJ you want to hire.

  • Equipment Is Important

Ask about their equipment. Is it industry standard? How old is it? What kind of condition is it in? What does the set-up look like? Make sure they have a good quality, clean and  professional sound system to avoid feedback, crackling and other wedding day downers that may come from a substandard system.

  • Ask about their music library

How do they acquire music? Every professional DJ should subscribe to an approved music pool where they receive licensed music. This ensures the right quality for listening and full, legal use of the tracks.  Also, ask if they are able to take requests “on the fly” if that’s something that is important to you.

  • Mic Skills?

Make sure they can correctly pronounce any uncommon names in the wedding party.

  • What Else Can They Do?

Do they let you know about other options, like up-lighting or photo booth? In order to create a viable career, many established DJs/wedding entertainment companies will offer options to enhance your wedding experience. In many cases, you will get favorable pricing by bundling these options.

  • Stuff Happens

Ask for a backup plan.  The reality is, no one is immune to becoming ill or having an emergency occur; make sure the DJ you have selected has an alternative plan should that individual have an emergency.

  •  You + Me = Us

Make sure there is some chemistry between the DJ/MC, you and other important people in the wedding party. You are going to be spending a lot of time with your wedding vendors and your DJ is a pivotal component of your reception. If you don’t hit it off with a DJ/MC, then you should probably keep looking!
